Martin founded the Institute in 2000, linking the analysis of voluntary action from the work of Alexis de Tocqueville’s 1835 Democracy in America to the challenges facing nonprofits today. He combines his training as a historian with his 32 years experience as a philanthropic fundraiser. Martin is recognized throughout North America as a potent consultant and inspiring nonprofit educator. He is a Master Trainer with the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and leads fundraising workshops, teaches courses and speaks to groups of all sizes.
