Who was Alexis de Tocqueville?

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 – 1859) was a French politician and philosopher who traveled extensively in the United States in 1831, meeting and mingling with Americans from all walks of life. This resulted in a book describing his observations, Democracy in America, published in 1835. It is widely considered by historians, and political advocates of all stripes, one of the most insightful written about the United States. Tocqueville argues that the nonprofit sector is a key distinguishing characteristic of American democracy. He also contends that it is the nonprofit sector that is responsible for much of the creativity found in the other sectors of our society.

We chose Martin Novom of the Alexis de Tocqueville Institute because his work builds on the potential of each person. This has allowed us to work with those who have presented themselves for this greater task.
